Our elevator contractor contacted us regarding a new elevator install. When we met the homeowner we reviewed the feasibility of an elevator shaft and the possible locations. After review the existing home plans, we noticed there was an addition drawn for the back of the home that was done at some point in time. After inquiring about that addition, it became clear that the homeowner desired a new kitchen. As things in their life changed, the elevator was no longer a necessity at this time and the kitchen became the focus. As we discussed the new design it became clear that an open floor plan would be the most suitable solution for their entertaining needs.
To achieve their needs, we not only had to combine the existing kitchen, dinette, and dining room, but also needed to construct an addition off the back of the house. This additional 91 square feet was exactly what was needed to get the space they desired. To make this happen a new steel beam was installed to replace the existing outside wall of the home and support the second floor. A new footing was cut in the basement floor to support the steel column that supports the beam. The dining room area now has a vaulted ceiling and 16 feet of windows overlooking their outdoor living space.
To put the finishing touches on the project, designer Anita Wiechman worked with the client to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. She was able to combine the customer’s style, integrating their existing spaces with the new selections. It was very important to Anita that the client’s desired outcome was achieved and the final result of this project reflects that.
