New EPA Lead Regulations
New federal regulations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
aimed at protecting children from lead poisoning will soon require
businesses that disturb painted surfaces in older homes, child care facilities,
and schools to use lead-safe practices. These businesses must apply for
certification, train their employees, and adhere to prescribed lead-safe work
practices. By April 2010, renovation contractors who perform work in pre-
1978 buildings must be certified by the EPA, all workers trained, and new
work practices implemented.
